» International Roaming

BT Mobile customers can use their mobile phone whilst abroad (subject to the country having a roaming agreement in place with BT). Before the customer goes abroad they should call Customer Services by dialling 150 (Mon-Sun 08:00-22:00) from their BT Mobile or 0800 0322 111 (Mon-Sun 08:00-22:00) from a landline, to check that we have partner networks in the country they are visiting.

All handsets are provided with International/Premium Rate Call Barring activated as standard, so if International Roaming is required, this barring must be removed before they leave the UK to travel abroad.

Customers may find that their mobile handsets automatically connect to the network with the strongest signal, as opposed to one of BT Mobile’s roaming partners. When customers switch their phone on, they will need to wait a little longer than usual for the network name or code to appear on the screen. If no network name is displayed the customer will need to go to 'Network Selection' in the 'Settings' menu and choose 'Manual'. When the list of available networks is shown, the customer chooses the one they want to use. Customers will need to manually select a network at this point.

Using the Right Handset
• Networks around the world use different technology and different radio bands. BT Mobile is a GSM network on 1800MHz. To roam on a particular network customers need a compatible phone.
• Dual, Tri or Quad Band refers to the radio frequencies on which the mobile phones can operate on. The three main international frequencies ranges are 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz. There is a fourth band - making a phone Quad Band which is 850MHz.
• Dual Band phones use 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands. It will automatically switch between the frequencies, even during a call. A Dual Band phone allows calls in main land Europe and the majority of countries except America. Most of the world’s GSM networks use this frequency.
• Tri Band adds the frequency 1900MHz, which is common in the USA. Having a Tri Band phone means it will function in the majority of states in the USA. Customers wishing to use their phone in the US, Caribbean, Central and South America will need to have a Tri Band handset.
• Quad Band adds the additional frequency of 850MHz. Quad Band handsets may be required in certain areas of the USA and South America.
• NOTE: In the USA 1900MHz and 850MHz GSM services are supported. In South America many countries only have 850 MHz GSM service.
The BT Mobile Roaming Experience
Whilst BT customers are roaming abroad they will need to use the international dialling code, if calling the UK +44 will be used
If this code is not used then customer experience will vary:
If the number is recognised on the network then the customer is routed to this number
A foreign announcement may be played
An unobtainable tone is played to the customer

Roaming SMS
Whilst roaming, a BT Mobile customer is able to send and receive SMS as if they were on their home network (subject to roaming agreements)
It is recommended that customers use the international format when sending an SMS
